Roscoe CEO on Safety and Inspiration for the Path Forward

City of Chicago by water

The last few months have brought challenges on a scale that few could have imagined. But big challenges can also bring out the best in us, driving us to find solutions and inspiring big plans.

While the pain, suffering and worry many families have had to bear under the threat of a worldwide health crisis is still with us, Roscoe CEO and TRSA Chairman Jim Buik writes in his most recent chairman’s column of the ways in which business, including ours, is beginning to move forward.

“We are all very fortunate to have great teams developing and executing safety and business continuity plans.” – Roscoe CEO and TRSA Chairman Jim Buik.

While it’s not risk free, a combination of planning and industry cooperation and communication has done much to reduce the threat and pave the way for a safe return to work, Buik writes.

“I am proud to be Chair of TRSA during a time when information sharing was literally a matter of life and death and the staff at our association took a leadership role in providing excellent content and clarity. We are all very fortunate to have great teams developing and executing safety and business continuity plans.”

Best Practices that Held Up Under Tough Circumstances

Buik also credits the best practices that Roscoe began implementing more than two decades ago as part of achieving three highly-demanding health, safety and process certifications, along with the effort of the Roscoe leadership team in ensuring our ongoing adherence to these standards:

  • ISO 9001:2015:  This international quality management standards certification requires internal audits that inspect operating areas to identify inefficiencies.  This certification is used by more than 1 million businesses around the world to establish structure and processes needed for long term success in complying with regulatory obligations.
  • HACCP:  The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification – a centerpiece of federal food safety compliance initiatives – imposes strict regulations for the removal of bacteria and the prevention of cross contamination.
  • TRSA Hygienically Clean:  Developed by the Textile Rental Service Association to include third-party microbial testing of garments to certify that they are hygienically clean.

Big Plans and Responsible Precautions

Buik writes of being inspired by the spirit of the world-famous architect Daniel Burnham, whose ambitious plans for the city of Chicago in 1909 inspired urban planning projects across the world, even as his own plans didn’t all make it to completion.

Moving forward, Buik is taking Burnham’s ambitions to heart and is moved by the words long attributed to the famous architect to “make no little plans.”

To Buik, that’s a call to action for efforts to “reboot” with “responsible precautions that will ultimately benefit our industry” by raising the bar even higher for the safe and hygienically clean processes that play a role in helping so many other businesses get back to work.
