The Roscoe Tradition of Developing Better Managers Continues

Mark Stedman - Friday, October 13, 2017

Executive Management Institute (EMI)

In a tradition that covers decades and includes generations of Roscoe company leaders, the company sent two employees to the Executive Management Institute (EMI) in Maryland recently to cultivate management and leadership skills.

Julia Buik, who joined the company full time last year and is the daughter of Roscoe President and Owner Jim Buik, completed her first year in the program, attending a four-day session along with approximately 30 other textile industry professionals. Office Team Leader Barbara Bailey-Polk graduated after completing her fourth year in the program.

EMI First Year Experience

Buik, who helps manage information technology and customer service data for the company, said she has already begun putting some of her newly acquired management training to use.

"One of the things I enjoyed the most and came back talking about was how to frame meetings in a positive way," she said. Buik said she learned techniques for encouraging brainstorming and creativity. One tip was to start discussions around "What are we doing well now? And how can we take what we're doing well now and apply it to this challenge?"

Buik said the techniques will be especially useful as the company moves into planning season.

EMI Fourth Year Experience

Bailey-Polk said she is especially grateful for the industry relationships she built over her years of attending EMI. "It's a very good program," she said. Among other things, Bailey-Polk said the program left her with better strategies for navigating people challenges and has made her more effective in her position.

The Roscoe EMI Experience

The program, offered through the Textile Rental Services Association, offers management and customer relations training as well as networking and an exchange of ideas among professionals in the uniform and textile industry. Over the years, more than 25 Roscoe employees have gone through the program.

The Institute's first-year participants focus on thinking outside of the box and learn how to use different management styles for different situations.

"We worked through so many things," Buik said. "I'm excited to go back next year."

About EMI

The Executive Management Institute (EMI) is a formal education program that delivers one week of management education a year to participants over four years. Each year of the program includes 30 hours of instruction over a four-day period.

Participants stay with the same classmates year after year, developing strong bonds while learning progressive employee and customer relations techniques. The staying power of these professional networks attests to the value of EMI not only for the classroom experience, but also for the informal exchange of ideas and experiences with counterparts.

EMI has enhanced the careers of thousands of textile services professionals and earned high praise from participants for nearly 50 years. The program develops the management and leadership skills of participants through team-building, interactive sessions emphasizing information-sharing and problem solving.
