Sustainability pays dividends to the environment, but it can also have a positive impact on the bottom line. Many organizations understand the benefits associated with work uniform rentals but reusable shop towels (rags), dust mops, wet mops, and floor mats processed weekly or every other week are also more sustainable and less expensive than disposable products. Having these products available, and in clean condition, reduces overall building maintenance and cleaning costs.text

Now that Earth Day is upon us once again, we at The Roscoe Company have been reflecting on our long history of sustainability. In fact, offering work uniform and floor mat rental services is by itself a sustainable practice for any organization. We've also added other "green" equipment, work processes and products through the years and have been recognized by our industry as well as the governor's office in Illinois for our environmentally friendly efforts.text

The Clean Green Environmental Award from the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) recognizes novel approaches by companies and/or facilities to increase sustainability, to conserve natural resources, and to reduce the operation's overall environmental impact.
In 2010, Roscoe won the inaugural TRSA Clean Green Environmental Award primarily for having consolidated two plants and becoming the most efficient commercial laundry in the nation. We've also been Clean Green Certified every year since the certification was created in 2012.
We earned this year's TRSA Clean Green Environmental Award for our Best Management Practices involving water reuse, reclamation and removal, as well as for various environmentally-conscious changes made in our physical workplace, including the initiatives below.text

Solid Waste Reduction, Resource Conservation & Clean Green Certified
Roscoe was founded in 1921 on the principles of sustainability – laundering and reusing textiles that were once discarded. This foundation of reuse has evolved over the years to include a variety of textiles and provides customers with alternatives to disposable products that find their way into landfills containing undesirable soiled materials. Roscoe installed the first wastewater pre-treatment system in the industry and holds the longest record of sustainability.
"Implementing sustainable best practices is not only smart for the environment, it is smart for the bottom line" remarked owner Jim Buik .... "our team members also feel a sense of pride by knowing they contribute to setting the standard in the industry."text

In 2012, the Textiles Rental Services Association (TRSA) launched an initiative called the Clean Green Certification Program. Shortly thereafter, we became the first industrial launderer to become Clean Green Certified and we are still the only uniform rental supplier in Chicago to be certified following our re-certification.
Every year, we go through the Clean Green Certification audit process. It begins with a self audit, which includes calculating consumption of natural gas and electricity compared to the number of pounds we produce and being under that Clean Green baseline. We also get credit for adhering to the other Clean Green best practices (below). The retrofitting of our plant six years ago to become one of the most energy efficient laundry systems in the country and one of the smallest footprints.text

In honor of Earth Day this month, the Chicago uniform company wants to acknowledge the ongoing efforts to enhance efficiencies in our plant, delivery fleets and across operations. Roscoe has always been committed to conserving and recycling natural resources and we PRIDE ourselves in our history of environmentally friendly laundering.
The uniform rental company pioneered waste water pre-treatment (first in the nation) in 1974 in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). With that under our wing, we received the Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award for reductions in water usage and solid waste in 1999. To further our efforts in water and energy reduction we consolidated the uniform rental company’s two plants into one in 2009 and earned the prestigious Laundry Environmental Stewardship Innovation (ESP) Award.text

True or false: Home washing consumes less water and energy as opposed to outsourcing this function to a large-scale textile services company?
You may be surprised to learn that this is false. Industrial launderers have experience, longevity, and responsibility in reducing their environmental impact.
An initiative launched in 2012, by TRSA (Textile Rental Services Association), called Clean Green certification program recognizes laundry facilities for “achieving efficiencies in water and energy conservation and adopting best management practices for reusing, reclaiming and recycling resources.” This should give business owners some peace of mind that their uniforms, linens, floor mats, towels and other reusable textiles procured from Clean Green certified companies are laundered in an environmentally friendly manner, thus, reducing their business’ overall environmental impact.text
